Fantasy Paper Dress-Up Dolls
Fantasy Paper Dress-Up Dolls
I was commissioned by a teacher to create paper dress-up dolls for his 7th grade class to accompany their reading of The Hobbit. The request came after seeing the dolls I created as a part of my university capstone project.
For this purpose, I made three doll sizes with varying leg lengths to encompass the varieties of characters who could live in the book's world. This means pieces that cover legs, such as pants and dresses, each needed three variants.
It was a real treat to expand on the visual language established in the capstone version to a larger, more detailed project.
A challenge arose in the format in which to deliver the project to students. Since the students were only making one doll, it would have been a waste to print the entire piece sheets for every student; but a pack per 2 or 4 students would limit the options.
The solution came in the form of a Google Slides document, a format the students are familiar with. They made their own copy of the master document and copy-and-pasted the pieces they wanted to try on their character on a blank slide. This limited waste and reduced the time taken to cut all the pieces.
